Martin Wolf is correct so “it is no longer necessary to question the science of anthropogenic condition change” (“COP26 is the reputable thing and not a drill”, Opinion , October 20). It is however required lay out what the science is to say in terms of practical politics and furthermore investment decisions. In a traditional to the government, we — a group of climate scientists and concerned academics — highlight finally the flat inconsistency between the general opinion on climate science combined with continued investment and warrant of oil and gas, including the Cambo field off Shetland.
In addition to ceasing investment in and license for new oil and gasfields, we call on the government to absolve the policy of growing economic recovery (getting key last profitable drop out when using the North Sea), and to introduce fossil fuel demand administration policies, and deliver a maintained and just transition away from coal and oil production, in particular ensuring that impaired workers are able to transfer efficiently into new low-carbon companies.
This is often indeed “an immense work, and [an] immense task”, but very much less so than that of dealing with runaway climate influences.
