Letter: Chilean democracy needs Boric to succeed

Those who count themselves strong allies of Chilean democracy have compelling reason to celebrate the election of Gabriel Boric as his country’s next president (“Chile’s leftward shift calls for a balancing act”, FT View, December 21).

I find myself in general agreement with the cautionary note you strike in urging Boric to soften some of his more polarising pre-election calls for a substantial restructuring of the Chilean economy to foster greater income equality.

It would be catastrophic if Boric fails in this undertaking and inadvertently brings another Augusto Pinochet to power.
