Jeff Zucker, the longtime head of cable news network CNN, has resigned after failing to disclose a romantic relationship with a colleague.
“As part of the investigation into Chris Cuomo’s tenure at CNN, I was asked about a consensual relationship with my closest colleague, someone I have worked with for more than 20 years. I acknowledged the relationship evolved in recent years,” Zucker said in a memo to staff on Wednesday.
“I was required to disclose it when it began but I didn’t. I was wrong,” he added.
CNN in December fired host Chris Cuomo, the brother of former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, after an investigation into allegations he was helping his brother defend against sexual harassment claims.
Zucker’s sudden departure comes as CNN prepares for new ownership and as it builds a streaming service, with the television industry increasingly moving online. AT&T, the Texas telecommunications group, agreed last year to sell its WarnerMedia subsidiary, which includes CNN, to Discovery.
