Martin Wolf is right about the BBC (“Our age of diverse media has made the BBC yet more important”, Opinion, January 24). So before tinkering with it Boris Johnson should be reminded that the brand is one of the major sources of UK soft power, and is taken as a standard throughout the world.
I remember my family listening to BBC radio for news during Portugal’s “carnation” revolution in 1974-75, when the local media were politically muzzled and unreliable.
Over the years I have enthusiastically watched various series produced by the BBC, especially the ones on the natural world. And when I stay in hotels, which I often did before the pandemic, I usually choose the BBC to keep updated. So, prime minister, don’t throw away the baby with the bathwater.
