Traveler shares her tips to prevent losing luggage while flying

Losing your luggage when flying can be a frustrating experience To help lower the odds of that happening, one TikToker has shared some of her favorite tipsto.

Ella Reshynsky (@ellareshynsky) posted a TikTok video detailing what she does to keep virtual eyes on her bag. This comes after the TikToker experienced her own recent mishap.

“Things I will always do when I’m checking in luggage as of now after having mine missing for an entire three-week trip,” Reshynsky said in the video.

The first thing that she does, and what she says reunited her with the lost bag, is use an Airtag — a tracking device from Apple —  in any luggage that she checks in. On top of that, she has begun to take pictures of the inside and outside of her bag, so that she has detailed information if another one of her bags ever goes missing.

“Photos like that would have been helpful,” Reshynskysaid. “Because if your bag tag is ripped off, when they open your suitcase, they can compare it to the picture you took before your trip and identify it as yours.”

Furthermore, she also suggested spreading out your belongings among different bags, which several people in the comments agreed with.

“Crosspacking is so important! At least one full outfit, jammies a swimsuit and sunscreen (if necessary) for each person in each bag,” replied @jharts84.

One of her viewers claimed that they used to work at an airline and offered their own advice.

“A copy of your travel itinerary inside your luggage is also very helpful! Former airline employee that looked for the lost luggage’s,” commented @sprinklesnunicorns.

Reshynsky finished her video by saying that when available, she’ll travel with a carry-on and try to keep her most valuable items on her person — which she says has proven to be a successful strategy.

“I was traveling for a wedding and I was a bridesmaid, and thank God I had my dress and shoes on me, because that would have been a really bad situation if I didn’t,” she explained.

Reshynsky’s tips could be helpful, considering the number of bags mishandled each year. According to the United States Bureau of Transportation, over 2 million bags were mishandled in 2021. That was only 0.51% of all bags checked that year, but the volume of misplaced bags could potentially affect many travelers each year.

As people continue to travel, keeping luggage safe is an important part of the process.
