A couple years ago I watched Peter Thiel’s Wriston Lecture. Along with his greatest hits complaining about the lack of ambition of the technology sector, he used the qualifier “sort of” 92 times in a 40-minute speech. For some reason I got the idea that this should serve as a model for intellectual leadership. I spent the pandemic “sort of” making my points. Thank you to Janan Ganesh (“How to talk your way to the top”, Life & Arts, FT Weekend, October 2) for shocking me back into coherence and confidence, straight up. Now everyone in my retinue is freed from speculating what I think.
