Letter: It’s a brave government that will tackle GP reform

The welcome article by Camilla Cavendish (“It’s time to stand back and ask what GPs are for”, Opinion, November 13) concludes that “we need them”.

Unfortunately, she omitted the important point that the NHS has made us all supplicants, in that we have to surmount the state-paid GP gatekeeper without any choice and be grateful for this mediocrity.

In that perverted sense, we do indeed “need them”, but not in the sense that they are invaluable in the current setting.

Perhaps a new model is called for where, as “community physicians” paid by results, they would regain their status on the basis of excellence.

Which brave government would tackle this?
