As you report (FT.com, March 8) the French food and drinks conglomerate Danone has chosen to continue operations in Russia, which accounts for approximately 6 per cent of its annual revenues, despite Russia’s onslaught of Ukraine causing a humanitarian disaster.
In an attempt to justify its decision, Danone’s chief executive gave the excuse that it has a “responsibility” to its Russian consumers. What about its “responsibility” to its western consumers who account for the other 94 per cent of its revenues and who are making significant financial sacrifices as a result of the sanctions imposed on the Russian economy? Danone has the right to continue to operate in Russia and its other consumers have the right to discontinue buying Danone’s products.
