TikToker @lthejohnson posted a warning to college students who may be planning to do some cooking in their dorms: Don’t, under any circumstances, place a hot frying pan on your dorm carpet.
The video opens with an explanation that without a hot pad and to avoid damaging the counter of their college dorm, the college student decided to place a hot frying pan down on the carpet floor instead. “Still seems logical to me,” @lthejohnson noted.
The results, however, were nothing short of disastrous, and the college student was left with the very damage they had hoped to avoid when the pan got stuck to the carpet floor.
Several attempts failed, but eventually, the student removed the pan from the floor — taking a circle of the carpet too. They then “steamed” the carpet off the bottom of the pan and attempted to stuff it back on the floor.
“Looks no different to me,” @lthejohnson quipped.
What happened to the floor?
In the comments, the TikToker revealed more of the backstory, explaining that the other burners were full and there was no available counter space.
“I was trying to prevent the smoke alarm from going off by removing it from the heat,” @lthejohnson said in the comments.
“It’s been six years, so hopefully they don’t come for me,” @lthejohnson wrote in the video caption.
Commenters were both perplexed by the decision to place a hot frying pan on a carpeted floor and the fact that the carpet had so perfectly lifted away.
“Why is no one asking how it basically fused with the carpet? what is the carpet made of??” asked @platonic.simp.
“THE FIBERS FUSED TO THE PAN,” pointed out @bathmat12.
As incredulous as some responses were, others admitted they had witnessed similar mistakes.
“No cuz i literally [did] that to our small carpet with a baking tray and absolutely destroyed it QAQ,” confessed @laenaeverwood.
“I used to work at a hotel and people did this with their irons all the time lol,” noted @applegeese.
Carpet equals synthetic fibers
And @baja.__ provided some insight into why the carpet may have reacted the way it did when exposed to heat: “Do people not know that lots of carpets have plastic or wax in them?”
“And this is why my sculpture professor said no polyester clothing bc it’s basically plastic and will melt,” @ghostishadows added.
The comments also included suggestions for college students who might be in a similar situation in their dorms or college housing. When in doubt, avoid placing a hot pan on carpet, because it may contain synthetic fibers that could melt or catch on fire.
Instead, use a hot pad, place the pan on a corkboard or open burner that’s not heated or rinse the pan in the sink to cool it down.
