antique dresser

If you have a drab, old piece of furniture collecting dust at home, you can give it a makeover to turn it into something new. In this episode of ITK: Furniture Flip, our host and DIY expert Bre Bringier (@redesignbybre) shows us how she turns an antique dresser from Facebook Marketplace into a stylish, one-of-a-kind piece. All she needs is some time, tools, and a coat of paint. Here’s how it’s done:

Tools

  • Sander
  • 150-grit sandpaper
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Off-white paint
  • Paint roller
  • Paintbrush
  • Topcoat
  • Paint stripper
  • Gloves
  • Furniture cleaner

Instructions

1. Start by cleaning the antique dresser with water to remove any dirt or dust. Then, remove any drawer knobs or hardware.

2. Evenly apply paint stripper with a paint brush to any places with stain that are going to be stained with a new color. Be sure to wear gloves while using the paint stripper.

3. While the paint stripper is working, use the sander and 150-grit sandpaper to give the rest of the dresser an allover scuff sand. Wipe off the sanding dust using a towel.

4. Scrape off the paint stripper from the places where it was used. Let the residue dry, then sand this section with the 220-grit sandpaper.

5. Paint places needing a solid color using the paint roller to apply the paint. Use the stain to color the sections needing stain using a towel.

6. Install all drawer knobs and hardware.
