But each time, the joke is basically the same. For whatever reason, dogs love eating mulch — even though it doesn’t make much sense to their owners.

According to Know Your Meme, the term “mulch gang” started going viral earlier this year after the user @sme11a_ shared a TikTok on Instagram.
The post cycled through various images and video clips of small dogs, along with audio of a man shouting, “MULCH IS HERE!” The caption also featured the hashtag #mulchgang, now added to countless other posts.
Since then, similar memes have appeared all over social media, sometimes tagged with terms like #mulchgangforlife or #soilpilled. Others have also mentioned words like “loam,” a type of soil containing sand and clay.
In fact, a considerable number of commenters admitted that they don’t actually get what all this mulch talk is about.
“just a question what is mulch,” the user @stargirll1314 asked on one post.
“BRO WHAT DOSE MULCH MEAN,” @lailacantbeurs wrote on another.
Other TikTokers wondered why all this strange new mulch content is suddenly taking off.
“WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE???” asked @cardamomicon.
It turns out that the “mulch” in question refers to literal mulch often spread over garden beds to prevent weeds from growing, maintain soil moisture and boost curb appeal. That’s also where all the talk of “loam” factors in, as it refers to a type of soil ideal for growing plants and flowers.
According to The Spruce, there are various kinds of mulch on the market, including organic options that feature a mix of things like shredded bark, straw, leaves and grass clippings, as well as synthetic options that don’t break down. But it’s the organic mulch beds that dogs really seem to love snacking on.
Animal experts think some dogs may simply be bored or curious when they chew on the common soil topper, while others are more drawn to the texture and flavor of what’s inside. Modern Vet points out that, in some cases, the attraction could also be a sign of an underlying medical condition like pica or anemia.
The good news is that ingesting the organic matter shouldn’t be harmful or deadly to them — as long as it’s done in small amounts.

With the mulch trend now viral, it’s actually spawned entirely new TikTok accounts devoted to all things mulch-eating. Accounts like @mulchfairy and @mulchiemania posted multiple videos about their dogs’ particular mulch obsessions — also called the “mulchies.”
