Early in TikTok’s history, music and dance challenges dominated the app. But as the breakout stars of TikTok dance trends have leveraged their followings to star in movies or launch products, it feels like there hasn’t been a major dance trend in a while.
The Water Dance Challenge, set to singer Tyla’s single “Water,” seemed to break the ice and become one of the first mainstream dance trends on the app in recent years. On the heels of Tyla’s song, Ayo & Teo’s song “Rolex” has inspired another dance trend as well — but this trend requires a very specific outfit.
The “Rollie Rollie” trend encourages participants to figure out how to dance to the single while wearing several layers of pants.

Where did the ‘Rollie Rollie’ dance come from?
According to their YouTube page, Ayo & Teo (@officialayoteo) are brothers named Ayleo and Mateo. Ayleo is the older brother, and the siblings are originally from Michigan.
After releasing “Rolex” in 2017, the brothers started the #RolexChallenge to share their music and invite listeners to dance along. By 2022, the brothers boasted their “Rolex” song was only 44 million views away from reaching 1 billion on YouTube.

The #RolexChallenge has over 723 million views on TikTok, with many different variations of the song. In July, influencer Sienna Bernardini (@siennabernardini) posted her version of the dance for her 2 million TikTok followers — with only one pair of pants on — kicking off the start of a new two-step of the “Rollie” and the “dab of ranch” set to the “Rolex” song.

The video has now received 7.4 million views, and fans seemed to quickly recognize the song and the dance moves.
“Ahh this trend is coming back,” wrote @user47k16.
Evolution of the ‘Rollie Rollie’ dance
The twist of wearing several layers of pants is an homage to the song’s lyrics, “I already got some designer to hold up my pants.” At some point after Bernadini’s video, people started to put more pants on, although it’s not clear which creator started the trend.

TikToker Tony Lopez (@tonylopez), who has 23.2 million followers, even took the layered trend a step further, adding layered baseball caps in a tower on his head to the look.

Some TikTokers felt compelled to take a trip to the mall to buy enough layers to keep up with the trend — even if they forgot to remove the tag before dancing.

The dance trend can also be completed as part of a group, with “layers” of friends to join in on the fun.

But in the end, if there can only be one winner of the “Rollie Rollie” dance challenge, it has to be the creator behind the version Ayo & Teo reposted.
