What’s the new ‘my core’ trend all about?

There’s 2000s older brother core, living with your parents in your 20s core, squatters core, Bob Dylan core… What do all these have in common? They encapsulate very niche trends that TikTok users identify with and ascribe to themselves.

Time magazine cites the suffix -core as being frequently used as a modifier to describe a type of aesthetic” on TikTok. Hence, the attribution of certain specific themes that cater to several creators on the platform. It seems like several new -cores emerge on a regular basis, but one, in particular, has gained in popularity and is actually counter to the association with -core that we’ve grown accustomed to.

Sofia Lopez (@sofialopezbe) shared a 17-second video on TikTok encompassing her core.

“Nah, cause this is the cutest trend ever!” she wrote on Sept. 15.

Gen Z creators have hopped on the “my core” trend, the latest -core to gain traction on TikTok. In their short videos, TikTok users showcase moments that they believe accurately convey who they are. These moments, a mixture of cheerful and at times emotional, include blowing out candles on a quirkily decorated birthday cake, twirling on a trampoline, goofing off with friends or even sobbing on camera.

Several of these included moments is near-candid footage of them captured by people in their lives. The trend, which was started by TikTok user @beasuser in May, has grown increasingly popular over the past month.

Lopez’s video has more than 7.3 million videos, 1.3 million likes, 126,000 saves and 1803 comments. Some creators have voiced their desire to get in on this trend but added that they’re unable to because they don’t have footage of themselves.

@skatenite wrote, “My core but nobody is there and I’ve been abandoned.” @kariiv1 also commented, “Another trend i cant do cause aint no one records me.”

“I love seeing people genuinely enjoying life,” @was_i_supposed_to_care added.

Gen Z creators like Miranda Rae (@mirandaalol), Alice Huynh (@aliceehuynh), Iris Dailey (@irisdaileyy) and Jordan Phoua (@jordanphoua) have also gotten in on the trend.
